We believe in order to change society for the better, we should start by addressing a number of issues. Such as: re-educating our police, drawing attention to media reactions in certain cases and blatant racism/prejudice within our community.
In line with re-educating the police we have viewed the case of Stephen Lawrence- and how the police dealt with it. Stephen Lawrence was an 18 year old black British teen from Plumstead; he was murdered by a group of 6 racist juveniles whilst waiting for a bus at Well Hall, Eltham with his friend, Duwayne Brooks, on the evening of 22 April 1993.
Lawrence left his friend to check if the bus was coming as it was already late. Halfway down, the six alleged thugs ran across the road towards him, hurling racial abuse and then one of the gang then proceeded to stab Stephen in his shoulder, once, then again puncturing his lung. Stephen tried to make a break for it but collapsed after 120 metres bleeding out. His friend told the jury that the interaction only lasted ten seconds before the group ran away. Brooks ran to a nearby phone box for an ambulance. A few minutes later a police car arrived instead of the requested ambulance.
The police, instead of attending to Lawrence, made harsh allegations against Brooks. They came up with theories that seemed racially motivated; that the two boys were a part of a gang and the attack was ‘gang related’. The police didn’t even check the body for injuries and initially believed he had a head injury instead of two stab wounds to the lung.
Even if there was a slim chance of survival for Lawrence, the police prevented it by not trying to aid him. Brooks tried to explain the situation to the officers who still didn’t want to believe the story. It was later found out that the officers on the scene didn’t even have basic first aid training. Two people passed by and noticed Lawrence’s body bleeding out on the floor with no attention.
