Crowned in FemininityHi guys, it’s your girl Regina again, back to give you again a piece of motivation to help us ladies to thrive in this male dominated society. For my mocks I was told they had to create a speech on a topic I was passionate about and perform that teach in front of my teacher. Overtly, I knew I wanted to write something about femininity because as you know I can speak for days on that topic lol :)
So one day I put on some inspirational music and opened a word document and found myself staring at a blank sheet of white paper, completely clueless in what to write. I paced up and down my room, trying to use the last of my brain cells to think on what to write and how to write it in a way that would not only touch my heartbeat the heart of other girls and women like myself. As you know, my room is an umm... organized mess ,so to speak, and while I was pacing up and down my room , I tripped over my chemistry book. I looked at the front over and saw my previous teacher’s, who had left the school a few months ago, names written on it. For confidentiality purposes we are gonna call her Dr. R. Yes Doctor, she has her PHD! I sigh every time I think of what she said to me when I asked her why she works at a high school when she has her PHD and what she said brought tears to my eyes. She said (I do not remember what she said word for word due to my horrific memory but it was something very close to these lines), “Regina, where I come from, which is India, even a PHD has no value, if you are a woman.” Fury took over my body , it was almost like it was burning when I remembered what she said. I was not angry at Dr. R, of course not . I was angry, no, livid at society and how society devalued women for so long and has told them not to dream big. Dr. R loved her job at my high school , but she wants to go on and teach A Levels and maybe even ,one day, university students. Yes, she has a PHD and the capability and the knowledge to do all these things she dreams of doing and she has the soul and sweetness of an angel, ready to take off, but society held her back. I wrote this speech in order to empower young girls of today, to break loose from the mangles that this patriarchal society had created and placed on you. I believe that if Dr. R had grown up with speeches like these to read or listen to and women to admire and be inspired by, she would not have had to believe some of the lies society had told her. India or England, Switzerland or Australia, no matter where you are, wear your femininity like a crown queen, never be ashamed, let none tell you who you can and cannot be , let none tell you that your dreams are ever too big. I hope you enjoy my speech and I pray that it will touch your heart and you will not leave the same way you came but in fact leave with more hope, more knowledge and most importantly more love <3! DEAR GIRLS OF TODAY BY REGINA ANGLEIQUE HENRY : Dear Girls of Today, I am speaking to you to tell you that … dear girls of today, I am tired. Tired of the way that many men still believe today that we as females will not be able to achieve, that we will not be great, they we will not be able to sit in parliament and debate; all we get is hate, upon hate, upon hate. And that is why I am here to set things straight. That we girls of today, if we stay strong, and if we, as a community, stand up for what we believe, there is nothing that we cannot achieve. This patriarchal society, boy, it brings me anxiety, sit up straight, do not speak, no not even a squeak. Fix your hair, grin and bear… Grin and bear. You are told to grin and bear, to put a smile on my face, when you have tears in my eyes and feel so out of place. I know you want to run; I know you want to hide. I know you feel trapped, inside and outside. But in these times, open you throat, let your voice be your song, let your voice be your hope. Let your voice show people that you are not ashamed for who you are and that you have come too far, too far give up now. Yes, let it echo from the mountain tops and yes, my dear, your voice will be mocked; people will want to take it away… Grab hold! I said grab hold of your voice, it is yours, a gift for the Almighty, never to be taken lightly. To all those you have walked before us, they shouted, screamed and even died so that we, as females, can be educated and not separated, so we can be seen as more than just pieces of meat for that random guy off the street or men sitting in parliament seats, just because we are considered weak. And as women of the future, we need to fight, to fight for what is right so our daughters and granddaughters will be able to see that being female is not a curse but a blessing and is something they should never be scared of professing. It is not about what I wear or how I decide to style my hair, so what is it about then? It is about what is up in here, what’s in my brain that matters. Why does it matter I hear you ask? Great question, let me answer. It matters because it shows people that I am smart, I am bold and I am ambitious; I was not just placed on this earth to cook and clean. I have a dream, a big dream. As Michele Obama stated, “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish” Yes, in life, you will come across the good and the bad, the small-mind and the open minded, but stay strong honey because it takes a strong woman to takes criticism and compliments graciously, knowing that it takes both sun and rain for a flower to grow. Dear Girls of today, I never said being strong was easy, I never said that it is going to be a smooth road, but I want you to walk down that road, it may get lonely at times, it may be full of darkness… You will fall. But if you can look up, girl, you can get up. So, get up! Get up! Do it for your ancestors, do it for you and do it for all of womankind, so that no girl, young or old, black or white, will ever believe the lies that this male-dominated society tells them. Look in the mirror. Do you see what I see? I see a leader, I see the next prime minister, I see the greatest lawyer, the greatest teacher, the greatest author. You are like a rock. You have had so much pressure from society, you have had toxic people tell you will never amount to anything and had heated arguments with people just to prove your worth. But think about. A rock needs huge amounts of pressure, carbon dioxide, which is quite toxic and high temperatures to become diamond. So in the words of Rihanna, shine bright like a diamond. And if people complain about the brightness, make sure to say, in all politeness, to put on some shades because you had to fight to where you are now. “Yes I am female. I am confident, independent and beautiful. Say what you like I do not care, because I know my worth, and I gladly declare that femininity is beautiful, it’s a crown that I will always wear.” |
